A series titled “Timket Celebration: Street Procession” is a collection of documentary images that I created in Ethiopia during an annual celebration of a festival called Timket by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest organised Christian bodies in the world. Today, more than 40% of Ethiopia’s population identify as Orthodox Christians. In January every year, a colourful religious and cultural commemoration of the baptism of Jesus takes place. It is called Timket, which is the Amharic word for baptism.
The documentary photos of the Timket celebration were exhibited in the Oh Snap! Gallery Exhibition at Afro Hub on June 24 & 25, 2017.
